Le balene ubbidiscono a Dio (2023)

Opera dedicata a questi animali dai forti significati totemici e sviluppato sulla base dei reperti fossili, trovati nel sito di Bargiano, in Umbria, di quelle che sono specie di balene estinte e di capodogli, ho selezionato determinate specie di cetacei sui quali lavorare: le megattere, forse le balene più note, evoluzione dei cetacei fossili del sito di Bargiano e i capodogli, famosi grazie a Moby Dick.

Il processo: ho trovato immagini di archivio e le ho stampate in bianco e nero con la stampante low fi del mio studio. Ho proceduto poi a colorarle con i pastelli e attraverso un procedimento ciclico di scansioni, editing, stampa e scansione, ho ottenuto le immagini finali. Nonostante l’alta risoluzione delle scansioni, la stampa low fi, unitamente all’editing, mi dà immagini rarefatte quanto riconoscibili, cioè leggibili: troppo definite per essere disegni, troppo rarefatte per essere fotografie.

A work dedicated to these strongly totemic animals, developed from the basis of the fossils found on the site of Bargiano, Umbria, belonging to extinct whales and cachalots. I selected certain cetacean species to work on: humpbacks –maybe the most known whales-, the evolution of Bargiano’s fossils, and cachalots, famous thanks to Moby Dick.

The process: I found archive images and printed them in black and white with my studio’s low-fi printer. I then proceeded to color them with pastels. Then, through a cyclical process of scanning, editing, printing and scanning again, I obtained the final images. Despite the scans’ high resolution, the low-fi print, together with the editing, produced rarefied while still recognizable images, i.e. images that can still be read; too defined to be drawings, too rarefied to be photographs.
