Northern Sea (2019)

Ho tentato, attraverso le immagini, di rendere visivo il paese di cui ho letto e ascoltato molteplici storie. Tuttavia la mera documentazione in loco non mi è bastata. Come raccontare un paese che sembra ‘L’Isola Che Non C’è’, dall’identità così sofferta e meticcia, tanto sono molteplici e contrapposte le forze che lo hanno generato e lo tengono in vita? Un paese fatto di dualità, dove segni opposti ne creano l’identità: Cattolici e Protestanti, Gaelico e Inglese, Leggenda e Storia, cura e abbandono, pace e violenza. Perseguire la terza via, quella a cavallo tra memoria e immaginazione, mi è sembrato immediato e affascinante: ispirandomi alla docu-fiction, ho collezionato erbari del mare, report e foto d’epoca e ho creato immagini ad hoc, come fossi un visitatore che dal futuro arriva in un paese ormai fuori le rotte. Che cosa vedrebbe, cosa vorrei che vedesse? ‘Limbo Land’ parla di un’Isola del Mare del Nord, dei suoi scorci e migranti, di caserme abbandonate e di naufragi che hanno causato la redenzione di mercanti di schiavi. Un’Isola all’apparenza quieta, tomba di pirati e patria di storie e aneddoti. Una Leggenda contemporanea nella Leggenda, la Mia, tra ciò che si ricorda e ciò che è scomparso, tra passato e un futuro solo immaginabile.

Through the images I tried to show the Country I’ve read and listened many stories about.Anyway, the simple local documenting wasn’t enough for me. How can you tell stories about a Country that seems to be ‘Neverland’, with a suffered and mixed identity, generated from such strongly opposite forces, forces that are still keeping it alive? A Country made of duality, where opposite signs shape the local identity: Catholics and Protestants, Gaelic and English, Legends and History, care and neglect, peace and violence. Pursuing the ‘third way’, between memory and imagination, seemed to me immediate and fascinating: inspired by docu-fiction, I collected herbariums of the sea, reports and vintage photos and I created ad-hoc pictures as if I was a visitor from the future, arriving in a country now out of the maps. What would he see? What would I like him to see? ‘Limbo Land’ talks about an Island of the Northern Sea, its views and migrants, abandoned barracks and shipwrecks that caused the redemption of slave traders. An apparently quite Island, a grave for pirates and a homeland for stories and anecdotes. A contemporary Legend in the Legend, My Legend, between memories and disappearances, between the past and a future that we can only imagine.
